Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and giver of wisdom. In 2025, the festival will be observed with great devotion across India. To perform Ganesh Puja at home, devotees must follow the proper puja vidhi (rituals) and prepare the necessary samagri (items).

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step)

  1. Ghata Sthapana (Kalash Setup): Begin by cleaning the puja space and placing a kalash filled with water, rice, and mango leaves.
  2. Ganesh Murti Sthapana: Place the idol of Lord Ganesha on a decorated wooden platform or chowki, covering it with a clean red or yellow cloth.
  3. Sankalp: Take a vow (sankalp) to worship Lord Ganesha with devotion, stating your name and purpose of puja.
  4. Invocation (Avahan): Light a diya, incense sticks, and invite Lord Ganesha to accept your prayers.
  5. Shodashopachara Puja: Offer 16 traditional items including flowers, fruits, durva grass, haldi, kumkum, and sweets.
  6. Ganesh Mantra & Aarti: Recite Ganesha mantras like “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” and sing the Ganesh Aarti.
  7. Prasad Distribution: Offer modaks or laddus as prasad and distribute among family and guests.
  8. Visarjan (Immersion): After one and a half, three, five, seven, or eleven days, immerse the idol in water with devotion, symbolizing farewell to Lord Ganesha.

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Mantras

1. Ganesh Beej Mantra

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः  
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

Meaning: I bow to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.


2. Vakratunda Mahakaya Mantra

वक्रतुंड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभः।  
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥  

Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha,  
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada.

Meaning: O Lord Ganesha with a curved trunk and mighty body, with the brilliance of a million suns, please remove all obstacles in my life.


3. Ganesh Gayatri Mantra

ॐ एकदन्ताय विद्महे। वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि।  
तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्॥  

Om Ekadantaya Vidmahe, Vakratundaya Dhimahi,  
Tanno Danti Prachodayat.

Meaning: We meditate upon Lord with a single tusk and curved trunk; may He guide and enlighten our intellect.


4. Siddhi Vinayak Mantra

ॐ श्री गणेशाय नमः  
Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah

Meaning: Salutations to Lord Ganesha, who brings prosperity and success.


5. Aarti (Chant during Aarti)

जय गणेश, जय गणेश, जय गणेश देवा।  
माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥  

Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh Deva,  
Mata Jaki Parvati, Pita Mahadeva.
