Pitru Paksha (Shradh) in 2025 is a 15-day period to honor our forebears. It starts on Sunday, 7 September, and ends on Sunday, 21 September, the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Each home may plan the rites according to the death tithi of the dear one. If you do not know the tithi, you can still do Shradh on the last day. The idea is simple, which is like saying thanks, praying for peace, and sharing food with love.
At dawn, clean the space and take a bath. Set a small asan near the east or south side. Place a kalash with clean water. Keep kusha grass, black sesame, and barley close by. Light a lamp and incense. Perform the tarpan ritual with water mixed with black sesame while facing south. Speak the names, if you can, and ask for calm and light for their souls. Then make pind daan with cooked rice. You may add ghee, milk, or honey. Offer the pinda with both hands and a soft mind.
Cook simple food that the elders liked in life. Feed a Brahmin, and feed a crow, a cow, and a dog. Give some food to people experiencing poverty. Keep the tone mild at home. Avoid wine, meat, and loud fun on Shradh days. Eat satvik food.
