The difference in the dates of Vat Savitri Vrat is due to the use of two lunar calendars prevalent in India:
- Purnimant Calendar (prevalent in North India like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana): Vat Savitri Vrat is observed on Jyeshtha Amavasya
- Amant Calendar (prevalent in Maharashtra, Gujarat, South India): Vat Purnima Vrat is observed on Jyeshtha Purnima
Though the dates of the fast vary from state to state, the story, rituals and spiritual purpose behind it are the same across India.
Puja Rituals and Vrat Vidhi
- Get up early and take a bath before the sun rises.
- Wear clean clothes, preferably red or yellow or traditional clothes
- Keep red thread, kumkum, sweets, fruits and flowers in the puja plate
- Go and worship near the Vat tree, or if you want to worship at home then keep the idol of Savitri and Satyavan.
- Tie sacred thread around the tree while going around it 7 times.
- Offer prayers to Savitri, Satyawan, and Lord Yama.
- Read or listen to the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha.
- Break your fast in the evening with simple food and seek your husband’s blessings.
Vat Savitri Vrat Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s:
- Observe the fast with full devotion and follow rituals as per your family tradition.
- Respectfully offer water and sweets to the Vat tree.
- Maintain purity of mind and body throughout the day.
- Read or listen to the Vrat Katha.
- Seek blessings from elders and your husband.
Don’ts:
- Avoid consuming food or water during the vrat (for those keeping a nirjala fast).
- Do not engage in arguments or negative speech.
- Avoid wearing black or dull colours on this day.
- Don’t cut hair or nails.
- Avoid using harsh words or speaking ill of others.
