This sacred festival, dedicated to Lord Shiva’s beloved snake deities, holds a special place in Sanatan Dharma. Falling in the holy month of Sawan, Nag Panchami is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and protection from doshas when observed with faith.

The Worship of 12 Snake Deities

On Nag Panchami, devotees worship twelve sacred snake deities, considered powerful protectors in Hinduism. The twelve nagas are:
Ananta, Vasuki, Shesh, Padma, Kambal, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhpal, Kaliya, Takshak, and Pingal.
Snakes are offered prayers, milk, flowers, and special offerings as a mark of respect.

  • Milk, water, flowers, roli, sandalwood, jaggery, and lava (puffed rice).
  • Recite the Nag Panchami Mantra: “Sarve Nagah Priyanta Me Ye Kechit Prithvitale… Teshu Sarveshu Vai Namah.”
  • Offer sweet dishes and perform aarti.
  • Conclude by pasting a picture of the snake deity on the main door and offering milk and lava.
